The work

Marble & Stone Restoration

Anthony Lipari has been refinishing stone for forty years, with his training rooted in Italy. Dust-free, and that is not a small thing

Grinding stone makes an enormous amount of fine dust, and in an occupied home or a working lobby that dust ends up in everything. Anthony’s work is done wet and contained: top quality work, no dust, no mess. For a Westmount townhouse with furnishings in place, or a building where residents are coming and going past the job, that is often the difference between the work being possible and not.

Marble floors, staircases and terrazzo

Montreal has an unusual quantity of original terrazzo and marble in its older housing stock, lobbies and stairwells, and most of it can be brought back rather than replaced:

Marble floors. Traffic lanes grind the polish away with the grit carried in underfoot. The stone is not dirty, it is scratched, and refinishing is the only thing that restores it.
Terrazzo. Poured decades ago and often buried under layers of old wax and acrylic sealer. Stripped and properly ground and polished, terrazzo comes back beautifully — it is a genuinely durable floor that was simply never maintained.
Steps and entries. The hardest working stone in a Montreal building. Winter brings in road salt and grit, and freeze-thaw cycling works on any stone that holds water. Entry stone and staircases take more punishment here than anywhere else in the house.
Countertops. Stains and etching are the two most common complaints, and they are different problems — one absorbed into the stone, one a reaction on its surface.

Hard water

Mineral-heavy water leaves scale in showers and rings around sinks and tubs, bonded to the surface rather than sitting on it. It will not come off with cleaning, and the acidic products sold to remove it will etch marble and limestone while they work. It is removed mechanically instead, then the surface refinished.

How the stone is refinished

The surface is worked with progressively finer diamond abrasives. Coarse steps cut past the damage and flatten the floor, including uneven tile edges; each finer step removes the scratch pattern left by the one before, until the stone reflects light again. Old wax and coatings are stripped first so the work is done on bare stone, holes and chips filled, and the finish taken to a high polish, a satin hone or a natural matte depending on what the floor should be. Finally it is sealed so future spills can be wiped up rather than absorbed.
